Collaboration is key!

Oh the beauty of iPads and GAFE! Our Grade 3’s embarked on another super exciting project.

We currently have a lovely ‘Friendship’ theme running at school. Integrating our Creative Writing, we chatted about Direct/Indirect Speech, Dialogue and punctuation.

We then did the following:

  1. On the iPad, we logged into Drive and created a new folder named “Friendship”. We split up in pairs – one friend being #1 and the other being #2.
  2. We created a new Google Doc in our Friendship Folder. Using the dictation tool on the iPad, we each composed three sentences. My goodness, the students faces when they saw the iPad ‘typing’ by itself – priceless!

3. We re-read our sentences, just to double check that the iPad ‘listened’ correctly.

4. Using the option of taking photos with the iPad from within Drive, we took three selfies. Our facial expressions had to match our emotion in the sentences written.

5. In the IT lab, we signed into Drive. Earlier that week, we shared with the students a Google Drawings template.

6. All the #1’s had to navigate to ‘Shared with me’, make a copy of the Google Drawings template shared with them, and then share it with their partner (also called #2).

7. Now it was time to collaborate! We opened the Google Doc created on the iPad and simply copy and pasted our sentences into our speech bubbles.

8. Once we finished copying the sentences, we inserted our selfies.

9. Finally, it was time to ‘prettify’ our Google Drawing by adding formatting. G+ is turned off for our students, so they cannot use the chat feature. However, they walked around to discuss how they were going to format their page – an excellent opportunity for 9 year olds to move around a bit after sitting for 30 minutes!

Our final product will be inserted into our Blogs and we will compose a Blog Post to review our learning.

What incredible learners we have!

How to eat a Gingerbread Cookie

Our Grade 1’s are iPadding! Yeah!

And what a better way to start than with a hands-on Creative Writing Lesson.

The learners first decorated a Gingerbread Cookie of their own with various yummy treats.

They then had to think in which sequence they would eat their Gingerbread Cookie. We specifically brought in some ordinal numbers to consolidate Numeracy concepts taught. They each received a little sheet on which they could write and draw.

They then took photos of each other eating the Gingerbread Cookies – probably by far the best part! 😉

Using the app Explain Everything, we then imported the photos and the learners had to narrate their photos.

Collaborative QR Codes with Google Docs

We are loving using Google Apps for Education on our  iPads!

Our Grade 3 teachers are very creative and they decided that the learners needed to collaborate.

They shared a Collaborative Doc with the kids – consisting of 8 tables (one on a page) that had to be completed. Each table covered different sections of information about South Africa e.g. Food, Culture, Provinces etc. They then divided the class into 8 groups and each group had to research and find info related to their section. One QR code was inserted into each section to steer the learners in the right direction.

During our IT lesson in the IT lab, the learners then accessed the Shared Doc and created a slide show on Google Slides which showcased our beautiful country.

First time exploring iPads!

IMG_2739

Let the games begin! Our Grade 3’s had their first introduction to iPads in the classroom! These little geniuses took to the iPads like a fish to water. They even showed me a couple of tricks 😄

I simply love the children of today – they are not scared to explore. They experiment, they try…. And should they fail the first time, they simply press the ‘clear all’ button and then they try again.

Well done Elkanah Grade 3’s – you inspire me and I am really looking forward to what you guys will accomplish this year!

Skype Book Review with Elm Wood Primary

What an exciting Friday our Grade 3 Kingfishers had! As part of Global Learning, we decided to do a Book Review with Elm Wood Primary School in London, UK.

Both classes read ‘The Magnificent Moon Hare’ by Sue Monroe. We then wrote down questions to ask the learners at Elm Wood Primary School.

We streamed Skype via the Apple TV. This made the Skype so much more fun as I could walk around and have the learners ‘close up’ to the screen.

Our Grade 3’s also did a dance for our friends! 🙂

A HUGE thank you to Ms. Theobold and her lovely class for making the time to Skype with us!

Educational, memorable and fun – the way learning should be.

Solar Systems final product

After a couple of exciting weeks, our Solar Systems Project has finally been completed. We inserted our PicCollages and iMovies into our PowerPoint Presentations and then watched each others presentations. I was completely blown away by the end result. The kids were so excited to show off their work! We invited our Grade 1’s to the IT room to watch the various presentations.

The learners had to write a Blog Post on Kidblog as self-assessment/self-reflection of the Project.
